Laidlaw livesIan Rankin has resurrected Jack Laidlaw with the style and feel of the early novels。 Satisfying and redolent of 70s Glasgow。 Mcilvanney would be pleased。

Overall， this book was ok。 I picked it up thinking it was a thriller but it is more crime based。 The storyline was good and the plot was decent。 Overall， it was a good read just not really what I was hoping for。

Full confession to start: I’m not a fan of noir literature， not American， Scandinavian， Tartan or any other。 This book interested me because Ian Rankin was asked to complete an unfinished book by William McIlvanney。 I’d never heard of the latter and never really liked the former but I’ve learned they are both considered giants so I once again entered the noir world， hoping for some decent atmosphere only to be disappointed again。 This novel is set in a grim， gloomy， sordid world of gangland Glas Full confession to start: I’m not a fan of noir literature， not American， Scandinavian， Tartan or any other。 This book interested me because Ian Rankin was asked to complete an unfinished book by William McIlvanney。 I’d never heard of the latter and never really liked the former but I’ve learned they are both considered giants so I once again entered the noir world， hoping for some decent atmosphere only to be disappointed again。 This novel is set in a grim， gloomy， sordid world of gangland Glasgow and police who are hardly more likable than the criminals。 Within the noir world this is a significant book because it is D。I。 Laidlaw’s first case， the prequel to a successful series but I found it to be silly and tiresome， filled with people I’d go out of my way to avoid。 The characters all seemed to be virtually the same。 The dialogue was crude and stilted。 The accents in my audiobook were enough to make me cringe at my own Scottish heritage。 The writing is good， as expected， but I couldn’t get past the characters and subject matter。 The basic plot and ending are quite good for a change but I couldn’t get engaged in the story and had to start it a second time because I realized I hadn’t absorbed anything I’d heard up to the halfway point。 I can’t say it was disappointing because I really wasn’t expecting much but， other than being blessedly short， I don’t have much good to say about it。 It’s okay but that’s about all。 The dialogue felt cliché and there was enough grit to keep the roads moving during an ice storm。 If that’s your thing you might like it。 It’s Rebus without Rebus。 。。。more

I have not read McIlvanney， but am a great Ian Rankin fan。 This was an interesting trip to Glasgow but it doesn't flow as well as Rankin's Edinburgh novels。 Not certain why yet， but when I read a Glasgow based murder mystery， I have no desire to visit Glasgow。 When I read Rankin's Edinburgh murder mystery novels， I want to visit the Oxford bar， New Town and Mary King's close。 I have not read McIlvanney， but am a great Ian Rankin fan。 This was an interesting trip to Glasgow but it doesn't flow as well as Rankin's Edinburgh novels。 Not certain why yet， but when I read a Glasgow based murder mystery， I have no desire to visit Glasgow。 When I read Rankin's Edinburgh murder mystery novels， I want to visit the Oxford bar， New Town and Mary King's close。 。。。more
